Spitzer’s Corner – LES, NYC
May 19, 2013
I could eat brunch for every meal.
Krishna crashed on the couch after a full day at GoogaMooga and woke with a day-after-wine-hunger. Realizing it would take Stacey an hour before she would be ready for brunch, we hopped on over to the local coffee shop for some fancy drip coffee.
Bonus points for their Game of Thrones wifi reference. Deductions for the exceedingly bitter coffee with the expensive price tag ($4 for a regular – i.e. small coffee). But, you can’t beat the proximity and the comfy loveseat facing the rain soaked street.
As soon as Stacey and Christina finally showed up, we headed off for Spitzer’s Corner on Rivington & Ludlow. I was super thankful for the extra pair of rain galoshes I found in the discard corner of my sister’s apartment. And even though they were so tight around my calves that I’m pretty sure my knees were muffin topping and I couldn’t feel my lower legs any more, my feet did stay dry!
We chose to sit at the bar rather than wait the 15 minutes for a table. It seemed more spacious than some of the communal tables we saw. Due to the alcohol consumption of the day before, we chose another round of coffee instead of bloody mary’s.
I couldn’t decide between the Pork Belly and Soft Scrambled Eggs or the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. So, I opted for both!
The pork belly was what us Chinese call hong shao rou; what the Japanese call buta kakuni; etc. But it lacked depth of flavor. It would actually be well served with a dollop of Coleman’s Mustard. The eggs, however, were perfectly scrambled. And I LOVE when my eggs are scrambled just right!
The lemon ricotta pancakes were amazing! Fluffy, subtly lemony but overt enough to really get a hint of the lemon and the maple syrup was also light and not cloying. Absolutely yummy!
FYI – 4 Asian girls can finish off 5 entrees.
For some reason, Stacey was feeling healthy and decided on the market plate. The mushrooms were delicious! But nothing super special.
I didn’t even try this one. Christina’s a vegetarian. I try not to eat veggie focused meals.
Krishna got the Chorizo Hash. Props for being something non-generic…but execution was a little lacking. I felt like it was under seasoned and the chorizo hash tasted like it had been cooked in old oil.
Overall, I liked the vibe, everything was very affordable and it’s usually packed there. So, maybe it was just an odd service for them? Either way, I didn’t see anything on the menu that would really make me come back. The lemon ricotta pancakes were definitely the star of the show and to think, we almost didn’t get them!
